What is acupuncture and how does it work? Acupuncture improves how the body functions by stimulating specific sites in the body itself. Very thin needles are usually inserted through the person’s skin at various depths to relieve pain caused by what is called stagnation or blocked energy.
Traditional Chinese medicine is over 2000 years old and examines the meridians in the body which hold qi which is energy or “life flow”. The acupuncturist understands which type of qi is needed to restore balance to the area where the physical problem is located. These physicians are able to pinpoint the exact location where the meridians cross over one another. These points are referred to as “acupoints”. By manually stimulating these points, qi can be restored, and the body is then able to heal.
There are two philosophical approaches to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and they are rooted in the two philosophical doctrines of Taoism: Yin-Yang and Wu-Xing. The Yin-Yang philosophy believes all things are interconnected, yet separate and the Wu-Xing philosophy believes there are five elements that describe the “interactions and relationships between phases that arise from the universe’s ongoing existence and development”.
